Hui Xiong is a Chair Professor, Associate Vice President (Knowledge Transfer), and Founding Head of the AI Thrust at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). His research interests span Artificial Intelligence, data mining, and mobile computing. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, USA. Before joining HKUST(GZ), he was a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University and held the position of Chief Scientist (Smart City) and Deputy Dean at Baidu Research Institute, overseeing five research labs.
Dr. Xiong has served on numerous organization and program committees for conferences, including as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Nature npj - Artificial intelligence, a co-Editor in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of GIS (Springer), Program Co-Chair for the Industrial and Government Track for the 18th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD), Program Co-Chair for the IEEE 2013 International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), General Co-Chair for the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), and Program Co-Chair of the Research Track for the 2018 ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining.
He has received numerous prestigious honors, including election as a Fellow of the AAAI in 2025, the CAAI in 2024, and both the AAAS and the IEEE in 2020. He is also recognized as an ACM Distinguished Scientist. His awards include the 2021 AAAI Best Paper Award, the 2011 IEEE ICDM Best Research Paper Award, the 2018 Ram Charan Management Practice Award – Grand Prize from the Harvard Business Review, and the Gold Medal together with the Swiss Automobile Club Prize at the 2025 International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.
